I Have To Do It, Why Can’t I?

Even when we know we have to do something, because it’s in our best interest, or helps others or our family, it’s not enough to tell yourself you have to do it. See, your head is wired through your heart. And, you can’t simply tell your mind to do something that your heart isn’t committed to and get the best results.

Here’s why: when we feel an emotion about something, it moves us to do it at our highest and best. When we don’t feel an emotion about something and the idea is a “have-to,” we rarely do it, and if we do, its not to the highest and best level of our capability. And, we are often times, unhappy with the results.

Can you recognize this in the things you are doing? If so, do this instead:
1. Think about doing the activity and see if any emotions come up for you. If so, what are they and what images cause them? Write these down and think one step further, asking yourself, “what will this mean to me when I do it?” or, “what will this mean to someone else, or how will it affect them, when I do it?”
2. If you are doing something to get a big financial payoff, think about what, specifically, you will do with the money, not just about getting it. Write down all of the things you will do with it and how those things will affect you and others. And how doing those things make you feel.

Try this with the thing you are currently forcing yourself to do….
